LEE
TOWNSEND

Lee Townsend is a passionate advocate for mental health and community well-being and is the co-founder of WeRunCroydon. His journey from a reluctant runner to a dedicated participant has not only transformed his own life but also inspired his family and many in his community.

Lee's love for running didn't come easily. Initially, he struggled to find joy in the sport that failed to offer him any fond memories from his childhood, but his determination to improve his health and fitness kept him going. This journey began with the formation of Jog N Jam, a mental health and wellbeing group for men, which forced him to lead a short weekly run as part of the programme.

After five years of perseverance, one of the positive outcomes of the COVID pandemic, Lee completed his first 5km run, a monumental achievement that marked the beginning of his passion for running. As his fitness improved, so did his goals, eventually tackling and enjoying regular 10—and 15-km runs. These milestones were more than just physical achievements; they symbolised his growth and resilience, embodying the important example of self-care that he wanted to model for his children.

Lee's transformation through running has had a profound impact on his family, particularly his two primary school-aged daughters. Inspired by their father's dedication, they regularly participate in Junior Parkruns and represent their school in athletics. Lee's commitment to running has created a ripple effect, fostering a love for fitness and competition in his children.

With a steadfast belief that running is a powerful tool to bring communities together, Lee has signed up for his first half and full marathons. He is convinced that running promotes positive wellbeing and offers an opportunity to appreciate the environment. Through WeRunCroydon, Lee encourages others to embrace running to improve mental health, build community ties, and enjoy the great outdoors.
